Gilbert and George, Gilbert Prousch and George Passmore

“We make art to confront people,” says Gilbert. Here, he and George do just that—that’s them staring at us.

In 1969, the two artists merged their names and identities. Since then, their art and life have blurred together completely: they live together, work together, and always appear together in matching suits. Their lives, particularly their homosexuality, take center stage in their pictures. Here, each reaches to the other with a “third arm.”
