18th-Century Spanish Colonial Casta Painting and the Work of Contemporary Artist Consuelo Castañeda

Independent curator and essayist Yasmeen Siddiqui will examine ways in which the cross pollination of an art historical period can enrich our understanding of a contemporary artist's work, and expand our knowledge of the legacy of a genre of art.

Her primary example and subject is the painting of contemporary artist Consuelo Castañeda, viewed in light of the legacy of 18th-century Spanish Colonial casta painting. Working across disciplines, says Siddiqui, Castañeda’s painting “is the focus...for discernible connections to an aesthetic, social and political trajectory conceived and established in the 18th century."
