Summer is…You Fill in the Blank at the Denver Art Museum

Update: Check out our handy dandy guide for photos of the many ways Summer is... has brought the Denver community together.

Summer Is…in full swing. This summer, the Denver Art Museum is celebrating the season with an interactive installation on the plaza outside the Hamilton Building. Called Summer is, the installation is a series of “urban campfires” that invite you to enjoy some R&R and share what summer means to you. For the past couple of weeks visitors have been doing just that—taking  a Summer is… tag, filling in the blank with summer-time memories, imagery and thoughts, and adding it to the growing canopy of summer stories.

Here are some favorites:

Summer is…the smell of cut grass.

Summer is… feeling the sun on my skin and getting new freckles.

Summer is…all around us, inviting us to live, go for it, have some fun, stay a while, and relax.

Summer is…like waking up after a long nap and finally seeing the beauty that isn’t in any other season. It’s the sun. It’s like art come to life.

Summer is…full of potential.

Summer is…marrying Kathy.

Summer is…Doing things that get overlooked during the year. Doing things that end up being more important in the long run.

Summer is…EXPRESSION. Through art, friendship, love, gardening, and joy!

Summer is…a fantastic voyage of adventure and pleasantries through the never-forgotten youthfulness of our hearts. (and blackberries!)

Summer is…a sunburn at the Rockies game!

Summer is…a reason to smile.

In the words of DAM visitors, “Summer is happening!” and “Summer is YOU.” So head to the plaza between now and September 8, 2014 to share your summer story.

Summer is….is made possible through a generous grant from the PB&K Family Foundation.

Rose Eason is the coordinator of adult and college programs in the education department at the Denver Art Museum. Rose has been at the DAM since 2012 and her favorite artwork that has been on view here is Mud Woman Rolls On.
