Behind the Scenes at the DAM

New on the DAM Calendar: Textile Talks & Workshops

Our celebration of textiles this year continues now that we have launched several more exciting projects at the DAM–the Thread Studio, a brand new textile gallery, and the opening of PreVIEW. The special spaces you may have discovered during Spun are still on view and now offer a suite of regular programming.

Open Window

Two of these offerings take place in PreVIEW, an open-view area set aside for DAM conservators and curatorial staff to examine, repair, and share textile works. Every Thursday 1:30–3:30 pm is Open Window. Stop by to chat with DAM staff and see what projects are currently underway. One week, a conservator may be repairing the backing of a quilt, while the next will find a curator reviewing works for the next textile exhibition. Drop-in, ask staff questions, and get a behind-the-scenes look at how artworks are prepped and pampered.

Textile Talks

For a more in-depth take on textiles, check out our monthly PreVIEW Textile Talks, which take place every first and third Wednesday, at 10:30 am and 1:30 pm, respectively.  Each month, DAM staff take on a different textile topic related to upcoming exhibitions.  In these intimate chats, you’ll get the inside scoop on specific pieces and techniques the staff are using to prepare artworks for display.  Designed to be informal sessions, visitors are able to get up close to the textiles and ask questions to DAM staff. The talks are open to the public, require registration and cost $5 (separate from general admission).

Since topics change monthly, you’ll want to bookmark our Adult Classes, Courses & More page, but here’s a glimpse of the next several months of offerings. In January, DAM staff will do a show-and-tell of recent gifts to the collection and end-of-year acquisitions. See what presents the DAM received this holiday season! In February, the topic turns to quilts as we prepare for the next big exhibition in the textile gallery. Hear about which pieces are in, and which ones may not make the cut, and why.

Thread Studio Workshops

Finally, if you need a hands-on textile fix, check out the DAM’s quarterly Thread Studio Workshops. Take a detour of the galleries with a local textile expert and then pick up a new skill in a related workshop. Next up is Pillow Talk on Sunday, March 9. Civic health club Warm Cookies of the Revolution will take you on tour looking at artworks made to facilitate dialogue. Then you’ll stitch your own “peace pillow” while discussing ways to build a better community. These workshops are free with general admission, but do require registration.

If you are a textile fan, the excitement of Spun didn’t end with the summer. So drop by, sign up, and keep exploring textiles in these ongoing programs!
