The DAM & Museo de las Americas Present a Mexican Master

The Denver Art Museum is thrilled to be partnering with the Museo de las Americas to present an illuminating exhibition of Gunther Gerzso's work this summer. Gunther Gerzso: A Mexican Master opens at the DAM and the Museo on June 25. The DAM will showcase some of his paintings and the Museo will feature 28 works on paper, four sculptures, and two books celebrating the artist’s career.

Gwen Chanzit, DAM curator of modern and contemporary art, said, "I am delighted to continue our valued, ongoing collaboration with the Museo de las Americas, and to again partner with Maruca Salazar and her staff. This exhibition, in two venues, provides an opportunity to highlight a rich range of work by Mexican master, Gunther Gerzso."

The exhibition will be part of the Biennial of the Americas event in Denver this summer, which strives to connect the Americas through a celebration of international ideas, culture, and art. The Gunther Gerzso exhibition exemplifies this year’s theme of “Biennial of the Americas-NOW” as the artist’s expressions and artwork address bicultural identity, and are suggestive of Mayan and Aztec culture. According to Museo curator Maruca Salazar, “[Gerzso’s] art is the true confession of a love affair with the great stonewalls of the Mayas and the Aztecs. His eyes were bewitched by the colors of the great rivers and lush jungles. His love for Mexico and his artistic generosity made him the perfect son of a conquered nation in search of an identity that defines us all as the perfect ‘mestizo.’”

Gunther Gerzso: A Mexican Master will be on view at the Denver Art Museum and Museo de las Americas through September 18. Members of the Museo de las Americas can present their membership card at the Denver Art Museum and receive 1/2 off the regular admission price to see the exhibition.
